David Glenn, founder of The Mix Academy

Built by a mixer who knows where the time goes.

I'm David Glenn, founder of The Mix Academy and a multi-platinum mix engineer with more than 20 years behind the console, on records with artists like Redimi2, Dr. Tumi, Blanca, and Christine D'Clario. MIXPrep is the prep tool I built for my own sessions. Now it's yours.

Sound familiar?

You got into this to mix,
not to rename 120 files.

Every session starts the same way: a download link, a ZIP file, and a folder full of Audio_14.wav, bounce_v3_FINAL(2).wav, and tracks you have to solo just to figure out what they are.

Before you touch a single fader, you spend 60 to 90 minutes renaming, sorting, gain-staging, and organizing. Every track arrives at a wildly different level. You open your DAW already annoyed, still searching for the key, the tempo, and the problems hiding in the session.

MIXPrep gives you back the first 60 to 90 minutes of every mix.

Drop in a folder. Get clean track names, gain staging done your way, automatic key and tempo detection, and a complete session breakdown, before you open your DAW. Start mixing while the coffee is still hot.

See it for yourself

From a folder of chaos to a clean session.

This is one screen, before and after MIXPrep. Drag the handle and watch the mess turn into a session you can actually work in.

Drag the handle, or click anywhere on the screenshot. That's TrackSense. And it's just the start of what MIXPrep handles before you open your DAW.

How It Works

Drop a folder. Get a mix-ready session.

No menus to learn. No setup. Here is the whole flow, start to finish. (The full walkthrough is playing up top.)

1

Drop a folder or zip onto MIXPrep.

Any folder of audio multitracks, or a zip file. WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3. Any sample rate, any bit depth.

MIXPrep import screen with a drag-and-drop zone for multitracks

Drop a folder and MIXPrep takes it from here.

2

MIXPrep listens, categorizes, and names what it can.

Vocals, kick, snare, room mics, pads, and 32 more categories. TrackSense reads both the filename and the audio itself, and turns names like "Lead_Vox_v3_FINAL.wav" into a clean "Lead Vox" instantly. Pure placeholders like "Audio_Track_14.wav" stay flagged with a NO NAME badge until you take a 2-second listen and label them. We won't make up a name we don't actually know. Across 100+ tracks in seconds, not minutes.

3

Every track gets gain-staged to the right level for what it is.

Not one flat target for everything. Your kick gets different headroom than your room mic. Your vocal gets different headroom than your bass DI. Category-aware gain staging, calibrated from real sessions. Load a reference mix you love and MIXPrint captures its per-category balance as a reusable template, so every new session can start at a proven balance instead of guesswork.

MIXPrep session-ready summary: files, sample rate, bit depth, groups, gain structure

Every stage handled automatically, gain structure included, before your review opens.

4

See your session before you open your DAW.

Key, tempo, time signature, and the full track count by category, detected automatically. You know exactly what you're walking into. (The full MIXBrief report, with mix priorities, frequency relationships, and an exportable checklist, is part of the Pro layer.)

Your multitracks go from a pile of mystery files to organized, gain-staged copies, with the key, tempo, and track breakdown in hand. In minutes instead of the first hour.

From Engineers Using It

Engineers are already prepping this way.

"I dropped a 90-track session in and had it organized and gain-staged before my coffee was done. This is the part of mixing I always dreaded, and now it's gone."

John S. · Mix Engineer, Nashville

"The category-aware gain staging alone is worth it. Most things land where they should before I even open the session. I start mixing instead of fighting levels."

Brett J. · Freelance Mixer, Worship + Pop

"It's honest. When it can't name a track, it tells you instead of guessing. That's the thing other tools got wrong, and it's why I trust this one with real sessions."

Adam B. · Recording + Mix Engineer, Rock

"It has been an absolute privilege to beta test the Intel version of MIXPrep and witness its evolution first-hand. The development team has been working tirelessly. The bugs are getting squashed, incredible new features are constantly dropping, and the brand-new GUI is both gorgeous and highly functional. I am so impressed with how far this app has come. It's an absolute game-changer for session prep!"

Jacki B. · Songwriter + Beta Tester

Features

Here is what is actually in the app.

Built by a mix engineer who got tired of prepping sessions the hard way.

TrackSense

37-Category Audio Recognition

TrackSense reads both the filename and the audio content. Vocals categorize especially well, along with kick, snare, room mics, and 33 more categories. Tracks we can't confidently identify get flagged with a NO NAME badge so you can preview, name them in one click, and move on. Every time you correct it, it remembers, so it is sharper on your next session, and the one after that.

Per-track category-aware gain values, with key, tempo, and ready-to-process status
SMART Gain

Category-Aware Gain Staging

Session-Matched Adaptive Ratio Targeting. Your kick, your vocal, and your room mic each get the right amount of headroom for what they are. Not one flat number for everything. Calibrated from real-world mix sessions.

MIXPrep Capture a mix, choose your DAW
MIXPrintbeta

Scan Your Best Mix Once. Start Every Session at That Balance.

Load a reference mix you love, and MIXPrint captures the per-category balance as a reusable template. Every new session starts at that proven balance, with per-category lock and SMART toggle so you stay in control of every track type. Stop building rough mixes from scratch. Start where your last great mix left off.

Clean Names

Readable Labels From Real Filenames

"Lead_Vox_bounce_v3_FINAL(2).wav" becomes "Lead Vox" instantly. Pure placeholder names like "Audio_Track_14.wav" stay flagged with a NO NAME badge so you can preview the audio and label them in one click. We don't guess what we don't know.

MIXBriefbeta

Your Session Intelligence Report

Before you open your DAW, MIXBrief reads the whole session and hands you the priorities: a plain-English read, what to tackle first, frequency relationships across tracks, mix approach notes for the genre, and the items worth watching. Export it to Apple Notes as a checklist or to PDF for clients. Part of the Pro layer.

"I'm really impressed with the Session Intel. It goes into detail with incredible precision, almost like looking through a magnifying glass. Being able to export it straight to Apple Notes as a checklist is just brilliant." Ricardo R., Mix Engineer, Brazil

MIXRef + SonicLensbeta

Reference Tracks That Actually Match Your Session

Stop hunting for the right reference. MIXRef analyzes your session's genre, energy, and sonic profile, then recommends verified professional releases. SonicLens lets you audition references side by side with 30-second previews, then links you straight to Apple Music and the iTunes Store to buy the track and add it to your library. Every pick comes with a confidence score and verified mixer, producer, and mastering credits, plus Grammy, Dove, BET, and Billboard award badges. Part of the Pro layer.

Session Intelligence

Key, Tempo, Time Signature, Detected Automatically

MIXPrep auto-detects key, tempo, key changes, and time signature from the audio itself. Know exactly what you're working with before you open your DAW. No metadata guessing, no manual BPM tapping.

MIXPrep's auto-detected session readout: 76 BPM, Bb Major, Camelot 6B
MIDI Key Map Export

Auto-Tune and Melodyne Setup in One Click

Export a MIDI key map based on detected key and key changes. Load it directly into Auto-Tune, Melodyne, or any pitch correction tool. Skip the manual scale setup entirely.

Low-end diagnostic: fundamentals flagged per track
Low-End Diagnostic

See Sub-Rumble Before Your EQ Does

Sub-frequency analysis flags every track that has unnecessary low-end energy, so you know exactly where to clean up before you even open an EQ plugin.

Track Translator

International Sessions? Handled.

170+ audio terms in 15+ languages. MIXPrep auto-detects international sessions and translates track names so every track makes sense, no matter where the session originated.

Privacy-First

Your Audio Never Leaves Your Machine (Unless You Say So)

Core processing runs 100% locally on your computer. MIXRef's default reference matching uses metadata and analysis data only, not your audio files. The optional Enhanced Mode (off by default) uploads short audio analysis to Google for deeper matching. For pre-release or major-label sessions under NDA, leave Enhanced Mode off and your audio never leaves your machine.

Make It Yours

Tune MIXPrep to How You Work

Set your own track order and category colors, dial in processing and gain targets, and pick your export and SESSIONPrint defaults. MIXPrep adapts to your workflow, so every session comes out the way you want it, automatically.

Who This Is For

If you open session folders for a living, this is for you.

Mix engineers doing 2+ sessions a week who are tired of burning prep time
Freelance mixers juggling sessions from different artists, producers, and studios, where every folder is a different kind of chaos
Producers who mix their own work and want to start from an organized, gain-staged foundation
Engineers working in any genre, hip-hop, R&B, rock, country, pop, worship, electronic, Latin, metal, jazz. If it comes as a folder of multitracks, MIXPrep handles it.
Anyone who's ever opened a 120-track session folder and felt their stomach drop

This is not genre-specific. This is not DAW-specific. If you receive audio files and need to make sense of them before mixing, MIXPrep saves you time on every single session.

FAQ

Questions? Answers.

Who is behind MIXPrep?
I'm David Glenn, a mix engineer and the founder of The Mix Academy. I've spent over 20 years mixing professionally and teaching engineers the whole way. I built MIXPrep because I was tired of spending the first hour of every session doing work that doesn't need my ears. It's the tool I use on my own sessions, and I read every bug report and email myself. You can reach me directly at david@themixacademy.com.
Is my audio safe? Does anything get uploaded?
Core processing (TrackSense, SMART Gain, MIXPrint, Clean Names) runs 100% locally on your machine. Your multitracks never leave your hard drive, and MIXPrep never modifies your originals, it works on organized copies. MIXRef's default mode uses metadata and analysis results only, not your audio files. MIXRef's optional Enhanced Mode (off by default) uploads short audio analysis to Google for deeper matching, and you'll see a clear toggle before it happens. For pre-release or major-label sessions under NDA, stay in default mode and you're fully air-gapped.
Does it work with my DAW?
Yes, two ways. With any DAW, MIXPrep outputs organized, gain-staged, named copies plus an AAF or DAWproject session file you import into Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, Studio One, Cubase, Nuendo, or anything else. And with SessionPrint (Direct Inject), MIXPrep builds your prepped session straight into your open template with no importing, Pro Tools in beta now and Reaper on the way. It prepares the session, you mix it wherever you already work.
What file formats does it support?
WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and MP3. Any sample rate, any bit depth. Drop in a folder or a .zip file (MIXPrep extracts it for you). Just point it at the multitracks and MIXPrep does the rest.
Do I need to be online to use MIXPrep?
Day to day, no. The core prep, TrackSense categorization, SMART Gain, MIXPrint, Clean Names, and your session's key, tempo, and track breakdown, all runs offline on your own machine. You'll need an internet connection once to activate your license, and for the Pro layer's online reference lookups (MIXRef). You can prep sessions with no connection at all.
Is MIXPrep available for Windows?
MIXPrep needs macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer. Apple Silicon is the production build and where I run MIXPrep daily. Windows and Intel Macs are in active beta. The latest build includes the major Windows-specific fixes (drag-and-drop now copies instead of moving source files, the silent install crash is fixed, the process worker no longer hangs on protected folders). Activation and licensing are solid across all platforms. A few visual polish items on Windows are still on the queue. If you buy in today on Windows or Intel Mac, you get the current build, a direct line to me at david@themixacademy.com, the 30-day money-back guarantee, and you lock in the $97 price for life. If you'd rather wait for full parity, email me and I'll hold your $97 slot.
How accurate is the categorization?
On tracks with real filenames or recognizable audio content, engineers report 90%+ accuracy out of the box. Vocals categorize especially well. Tracks with pure placeholder names like "audio_1.wav" stay flagged until you preview and label them, we don't guess what we don't know. Every correction trains the teachable dictionary, and most engineers see 95%+ accuracy on familiar session types after a few rounds.
What's the difference between Core at $97 and the Pro layer?
MIXPrep Core at $97 is the full desktop app, TrackSense categorization, SMART Gain, MIXPrint balance fingerprinting, Clean Names, and your session's key, tempo, and track breakdown, everything that runs on your machine. One-time payment, permanent access. The Pro layer adds the full MIXBrief Session Intelligence Report (mix priorities, frequency relationships, approach notes, and an exportable Apple Notes or PDF checklist), MIXRef (AI-matched reference tracks), SonicLens (side-by-side reference audition), SessionPrint (drop your prepped session straight into Pro Tools, in beta), and PhaseSync (in development). You can get it as the one-time $247 Pro Founder tier above, or add it later. Core features always work without it.
If I buy now, will I ever be forced into a subscription?
No. Buy during the founders window and MIXPrep is yours for a one-time payment, with free updates included and no monthly bill ever. On September 1 MIXPrep moves to subscription pricing for new customers, but that does not reach back and change what you already own. Your founders price is locked for life. This is the whole point of the window: own it once now, before the pricing changes.
What is the Control Room?
The Control Room is The Mix Academy membership, around $49/month. It's my full course library, live Control Room sessions and replays, and a community of engineers learning together, and MIXPrep is included. Think of it this way: MIXPrep preps your session, the Control Room is where I help you finish the mix. You can buy MIXPrep on its own first and join the Control Room whenever you want me alongside you.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes. 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. If MIXPrep doesn't save you real time on real sessions, email me and you'll get a full refund. No hoops.
How is this different from just organizing my files manually?
Same outcome, a fraction of the time. MIXPrep does in seconds what takes you 45 to 90 minutes by hand, and it does the gain staging with category-specific intelligence you'd otherwise have to calculate for each track type. Plus MIXPrint gives you a starting balance no manual workflow can match.
Does MIXPrep work with screen readers or keyboard-only navigation?
We're actively auditing MIXPrep for VoiceOver compatibility, keyboard navigation, color contrast, and high-contrast display. The app isn't fully accessible yet, and we'd rather tell you that honestly than pretend otherwise. If you rely on assistive technology, email david@themixacademy.com before purchasing so we can be straight with you about what works today and what's in progress. Engineers with vision loss make great mixes too, and we want MIXPrep to be a tool you can actually use.
macOS says it can't verify MIXPrep. Is it safe?
Yes, completely safe. MIXPrep is code-signed and notarized with Apple, so most Macs open it without any warnings. If you do see a Gatekeeper prompt (rare on older macOS versions), open Terminal and paste: xattr -cr /Applications/MIXPrep.app then open normally. One time only. MIXPrep runs entirely on your machine, your audio files never leave your computer.
The Story Behind MIXPrep

Born out of necessity. Built with obsession.

I'm David Glenn. Mix engineer, founder of The Mix Academy. Over 20 years mixing professionally, teaching engineers the whole way. I stepped away for a season, life, health, all of it. When I came back, able to work again, I hit a snag I didn't expect.

The prep tool I'd used on every session for years wouldn't even open. Just dead. And it forced a question I couldn't ignore: why am I still spending the first hour of every mix doing work that doesn't require my ears?

Renaming tracks. Sorting multitracks. Fixing gain staging. Trying to make sense of someone else's session. That's not mixing. But it's where all your best energy goes.

So I started building a small utility, just enough to handle gain staging and mono conversion. That was the plan. Then the hyperfocus kicked in. One fix turned into another, and pretty soon it wasn't a tool anymore. It was a system. Every feature built around one idea: get the grunt work done before the creative decisions start.

Here's the part that still gets me. My very first course, back in 2011, was called "The Mix Prep Series." Gain staging. Session organization. The fundamentals. Fifteen years later, the thing I was teaching became the thing I'm shipping. Same fundamentals, different form. Full circle.

I built this because I needed it. I'm sharing it because I think you need it too.

Your next session starts an hour ahead.

Drop a folder. Get organized files, category-aware gain staging, and your session's key, tempo, and track breakdown. Start mixing instead of prepping.
